You can't remember what you haven’t been told

Do you get in trouble for things you didn’t know?

Do you feel like you’re expected to remember every detail from a meeting a week ago? Or exactly which file was mentioned that you’d need when doing some task? Maybe you’ve been working really hard on something, then find out your boss wanted you doing some other task. And even when you’ve done the task just like you were asked to, it all suddenly changes and you’re made to feel like it’s your fault for not predicting that.

And it leaves you wondering, “If it’s so important, why not make it clear instead of expecting me to dig for it?”

Your boss is just different

Sometimes it seems like they can hold every little detail in their head, forever. They know exactly how things need to be done, and expect you to just know that too. In their world, everything has a priority and it is obvious. And it’s like they live in the file system and seem surprised when you don’t know something exists.

People like that often end up running things, and that’s fine. What’s not fine is being expected to be just like them.

You need a space you can manage your way

Everywhere else in life, you make things work your way. And this structure is how you make your life easy. But at work you’re required to fit in. Which makes sense, to some extent. But there has to be a balance. You can have a workspace that helps you extract everything you need from your manager’s head, and keep it together in a way that makes sense to you. If the boss has a priority, your workspace should make it easy for them to make that clear. Then you can just step through your tasks, one at a time, with everything you need right there.
